The Central House Hotel located in Burlington. Built around 1840, this hotel was one of only two hotels in town, serving a stage coach route from Covington to Burlington. In addition to a hotel, this building has also been a tavern, a hardware store, a department store, and several restaurants. In 1940, A.E. “Pete” Stephens purchased the building and opened the Burlington Hardware and Dry Goods Store. Burlington residents were able to have copper pipe cut, an oil lamp restored, resupply on cattle feed, or purchase fishing tackle. It remained a hardware store until 2002 when it closed. The building has since housed a number of restaurants. It stands today as a cornerstone of Burlington’s commercial district.
