Charles B. Hayward
Charles B. Hayward was born in Cincinnati, in 1852. He graduated at Woodward High School, and then became clerk for a wholesale grocer, remaining ten years, when the firm went out of business. In 1874 Mr. Hayward came to Dayton and in 1879 went into the grocery trade here. In 1886 he was elected city clerk to fill a vacancy, and has since held the office by reelection. It had been a custom to have an expert to find out how the finances stood. and the records of the office were sometimes lacking or inaccurate. All this was soon corrected by Mr. Hayward, and no expert is now needed to unravel Dayton's affairs. While performing his official duties with scrupulous exactness, and with unfailing promptitude, Mr. Hayward responds with tireless good nature to a thousand and one calls from people of every degree and asking all sorts of favors. No other official is so often sought, and none has a greater multitude of friends. He has five children.
The GAR (a short history of the organization is at this site) held it's annual encampment in Dayton in September,1898. All of the Dayton images and texts dated 1898 are from the souvenir booklet prepared for the occasion.
