Mr. Felix B. Mader was born in St. Gall, Switzerland, sixty-four years ago. He was brought to this country by his parents when he was nine years old. The family first went to New Orleans, but in a few months removed to Cincinnati. In 1863 Mr. Mader came to Dayton, which has been his home since. For twenty-five years he was a ship carpenter, passing some of that time on the riverboats. He has been a carpenter and builder. He built the first tollgate at Ft. Thomas, on the Twelve Mile Pike. Some of his principal work in Dayton is the parochial school building of St. Francis Church, and the sightly brick houses of Joseph and Nannie Taylor, on the hill at the head of Terrace Avenue. Mr. Mader was elected Mayor in 1869, but resigned the office before completing his term, private business demanding his attention. He has also served a term in city council. During the war he was first lieutenant of a home guard at Camp Springs. Mr. Mader is one of the most public-spirited of citizens, and takes an intelligent interest in all matters affecting the city's welfare. His strict integrity is respected by all. |
