John Gable
John Gable was born March 17, 1855, in Pennsylvania, but was brought to Shelbyville, Ky., at six years of age, and to Louisville in 1861. He learned the printing pressman's trade at the John. P. Morton & Co. office. In 1880 he came to the Western Methodist Book Concern in Cincinnati and remained there fourteen years, for four of which he was foreman of the concern's press rooms. In 1894 he set up his own press room at his present stand, 422 Elm Street, where he has the best of printing press machinery. This book was printed on his presses and is a sample of his work. In 1880 Mr. Gable married Miss Mattie B. Knight, of Lexington, and by her has three children. The family came to Dayton in 1884. Mr. Gable has served two terms in the school board, where he was very active and energetic in the interest of good schools. He has held no other public office, and seeks none.
The GAR (a short history of the organization is at this site) held it's annual encampment in Dayton in September,1898. All of the Dayton images and texts dated 1898 are from the souvenir booklet prepared for the occasion.
