Geo. W. Smith was born in Bristol, England, Sept. 21, 1852, moved to Toronto, Canada, in 1856, and to Cincinnati in 1860; live in Cincinnati during the civil war; then moved to Newport in 1865, and in 1867 to Dayton, and has lived there since.  Married Missouri Belle    Niles, of Campbell county, Kentucky-four girls and two boys.  He was a member of city council during 1896 and 1897, and has at all times commanded the respect and confidence of his fellow citizens.  He lives quietly and comfortably in his house, shown on this page, on Fourth avenue below Walnut - as attractive a place as the vicinity affords.

The GAR (a short history of the organization is at this site) held it's annual encampment in Dayton in September,1898.  All of the Dayton images and texts dated 1898 are from the souvenir booklet prepared for the occasion.
