  L. C. Winter was born in Cincinnati, May 22, 1846, but passed his earlier years in Indiana.  There, in 1871-72, he taught the first German-English school established in Ripley county.  He came to Dayton in 1888, and is a painting contractor.  Mr. Winter is now in his first public office.  He was elected to School Board from the Second Ward in 1897, the only Republican elected in the ward.  His experience of his earlier years in teaching stands him good stead now, and he is proving himself to be a useful member, with practical and accurate knowledge of the educational methods of the day. [Mr. Winter was a printer, and was at the northwest corner of Sixth and McKinney]

The GAR (a short history of the organization is at this site) held it's annual encampment in Dayton in September,1898.  All of the Dayton images and texts dated 1898 are from the souvenir booklet prepared for the occasion.
