Herman Joering
Herman Joering was born in the Kingdom of Hanover fifty-five years ago. At the age of seven he was brought to Cincinnati, and when ten years old came to Dayton, where he attended St. Francis parochial school. He followed in the footsteps of his father and became a tailor. During the war he was a musician on the U.S. flagship Blackhawk, on the Mississippi. Returning from the war, he took up the manufacturing of clothing, which he still carries on. Mr. Joering has been about twenty-one years in public office. He is now in his fifth term in council; has served seven times in the school board, and parts of two terms as mayor under the old charter. He makes a very useful member, being of course excellently posted in city affairs. He is very popular in his ward, the First, and he attends to his councilman's duties with all his old time zeal and faithfulness. [He lived at 1108 Third Avenue.]
The GAR (a short history of the organization is at this site) held it's annual encampment in Dayton in September,1898. All of the Dayton images and texts dated 1898 are from the souvenir booklet prepared for the occasion.
