St. John's Episcopal Church
St. John's Episcopal Church was organized about twenty-five years ago. Under Rev. F. Elwell, rector from 1872 to 1879, the church was remarkably prosperous. Mr. Guerrin was rector from 1883 to 1887, and then the church passed into the care of the Newport church until 1896, when Rev. Rollo Dyer, present rector, took charge. Then came a reviving influence, and during the present year the old building on McKinley street has been sold, and it is proposed to build at the corner of Eighth and O'Fallon avenues, after the design shown on this page. IT will be one of the finest church edifices on this side of the river, centrally located for the membership, which is largely beyond the boundary of the city. The site is a most favorable one, and the lot is ample for all purposes.
The GAR (a short history of the organization is at this site) held it's annual encampment in Dayton in September,1898. All of the Dayton images and texts dated 1898 are from the souvenir booklet prepared for the occasion.
