The Maple Avenue Fishing Club was organized in 1892.  The first president was George A. Klein; the first secretary, Eli Pierce; the first treasurer, Ross Thomas.  In 1894 the little club house, located in the willows near the foot of Dayton street, was washed away.  Then the present house was built, and in 1896 it was carried down the river in the high water.  It was towed back and is now mounted on piles and fastened so as to be secure from drifting off.  The club has seine, boats, etc., and its social feature embraces the members and their families.  Present officers are: President, H. Otters; Secretary, Wm. Prigge; Treasurer, R. Mader.  The club promises a hearty welcome to all visiting G.A.R. veterans.

The GAR (a short history of the organization is at this site) held it's annual encampment in Dayton in September,1898.  All of the Dayton images and texts dated 1898 are from the souvenir booklet prepared for the occasion.
