Weingartner's

Joseph Weingartner's Planing Mill was a manufacturer of doors, blinds, sashes, frames, and mouldings. The company maintained two locations in Newport: an office and warehouse on Monmouth Street, and a production facility on Saratoga Street. Mr. Weingartner was a long-time resident of Newport and, in addition to being a business owner, was also a city councilman representing the 5th Ward. Weingartner's Planing Mill dates to at least 1870 and was one of several mills located in Newport at the time.

The pictures below show the two buildings owned by Mr. Weingartner. The picture is of the original office and warehouse on Monmouth Street. Immediately to the rear of this building was the Saratoga Street production building, which was torn down in 1884 and replaced with the 3-story brick structure in the second picture.

Mr. Weingartner sold the planing mill to the Newport Manufacturing Company in 1920, who in turn manufactured automotive and truck bodies in the building. By the 1950's, the building was occupied by the Auto Vehicle Parts Company, which manufactured automotive trim components. The current owner (per the Campbell County PVA) is E & B Properties, which has owned the building since 1997. For good measure, I'm also including a Sanborn Fire Insurance map of the area around the planing mill.

Interesting tidbit: The addresses in the second image are listed as 303 & 305 Monmouth, and 296 & 298 Saratoga. No, the buildings did not move. Prior to 1890, Newport's east-west streets had names like Tibbatts (now 10th Street) and Williamson (now 11th Street). When the city converted to numerical designations in 1890, the buildings were re-numbered.
