The Zommers
The Zommers family escaped from Latvia when the communists invaded, and fled to Germany in 1944 and were in a UNRRA Displaced Persons Camp from 1945 to 1949. They migrated to US in the fall of 1949, and the father, Hermanis Zommers was hired as a caretaker for Camp Meacham in Mentor, Kentucky by the Cincinnati Y.M.C.A.
Milda Zommers, his wife, worked in the mess hall part-time and raised the family and all of the animals - cows, pigs, rabbits, chickens, dogs and cats.
The two oldest sons, John Zommers and Viesturs Zommers worked at the camp before going into the military and later to college.
The two youngest sons, Andy Andris Zommers and George Juris Zommers worked in the mess hall and as counselors. Both attended Campbell County High School in Alexandria.
The family moved to Washington State in 1957.
