Williamstown Airport

Being something of an amateur aviation sleuth, I did a little snooping around on the Williamstown Airport and this is what I found out:

The “Williamstown Airport” appears on the US Aeronautical Charts as far back as 1930 and extending up until March of 1933, but is missing from the November 1933 and thereafter. There was no data given on the charts of the era regarding facilities, runway length, services, etc. however... Aeronautical charts DID began being geo-referenced in the early 30's, which allows us to get an approximation of where this airport was located. Using the March, 1933 chart, the best approximation I have been able to come up with is that the Williamstown Airport (which might well have been nothing but a cleared field) was located at 38 39.5 North, and 84 34.0 West. That puts it's present day location on Conrad Ln, about about .63 miles East of Main St (Rt 25).

Interestingly, Google Earth shows a strip of cleared land bordered by trees about 1,200' long at that location, but no other identifying characteristics that would identify it's former use. Even more interestingly, that same cleared strip shows up on the Historic Aerials photo of that parcel as far back as 1949, at which time there were dwellings nearby.

I could find no other references on the internet to the Williamstown Airport, and 90-years on, it's unlikely there's anybody living in the area that would remember it.

Maybe some old feller decided that in the wake of Lindberg's crossing, there would be more money to be made (and less time spent behind a plow) running an airport than in farming?
