Claim Latonia Will Annex

The general impression among the citizens is that Latonia will vote for annexation to Covington next Tuesday. They claim they are not receiving sufficient fire and police protection, have no high school, and that the financial condition of the city is such that it warrants them to become a part of Covington. All of the saloon keepers are in favor of annexation due to the fact that the Anti-Saloon League is arranging a vote on local option. Mayor J. T. Earle's figures on the standing of different funds, and who asserts the entire debt of Latonia is $100,000 and which includes all of the bond issues, is also convincing taxpayers that it is time to annex to Covington.

Latonia Annexes to Covington

Latonia yesterday voted to annex to Covington by a majority of 78 votes, and just as soon as Mayor John J. Craig signs the ordinance, Council of Latonia will call a meeting and wind up its affairs. Then Covington will take charge of the books and other records of that city and move them to Covington. The territory is larger than that of Covington and will only include one portion of the Latonia Race Course: the betting shed, grand stand, club house and the rest of the ground west being excluded. It will mean that Covington will have to give them more patrolmen and more fire protection. Two contracts have been let for school buildings at a cost of $5,000 each. Latonia has about 8,000 inhabitants, and with Covington's 50,000, it will be greater Covington sure enough. The next move may be to annex West Covington and Ludlow and make it one city. In taking Latonia it means the paying off of a debt of close to $100,000.
