Mussel Shoals
Mussel Shoals Baptist Church was established on October 11, 1817 by John Reese, John Scott, Joseph Jones, John Searcy, Samuel Trott, Benjamin Lambert, and John Quill as an outgrowth of the Mountain Island Church which was a few miles upstream on Eagle Creek. This area was in Scott County at that time because Owen County was not formed until February 6, 1819 from sections of Scott, Franklin, Gallatin, and Pendleton counties. The Mussel Shoals church was the third church to be built on what would eventually be Owen County soil, with the New Liberty Baptist Church being the first constructed in 1810 as a log building. The present day Mussel Shoals church is believed to be the fourth structure used by the church and was constructed for that purpose between 1905 and 1911. In 1871 Mussel Shoals Baptist Church was reported to have 478 members! In 1879 the Mussel Shoals church helped to organize the Lusby's Mill Baptist Church.
