Hessians

The Hessians (Wikipedia) were German soldiers - mercenaries - who fought for the British in the American Revolutionary War. Of the 30,000 who came to America, somewhere between 3,000 and 6,000 decided they'd stay in America. At least two of them ended up in Bracken County.

Friedrich Spies, born 1756-57 or so in Schwebda, Germany. Married on Elizabeth Mozier (1765-1812) in Lancaster, Pa., and died in Augusta before March 4, 1833.
