Looking North on North Main
This picture ran in the Enquirer on June 5, 1958 and shows a tank car of yellow phosphorous burning at the foot of Alta Vista. The firemen were told by experts to “put water, water, and more water on it.” They did. No one was injured. (That's Ed Berkemeier at the front of the hose, with Chick Worthington in the white hat behind him. The man with his hands on his hips, with a straw hat, is thought to be Wallace Grubbs.) |

On October 24, 1929, a southbound train hit and killed a truck driver on the intersection of the L&N at Nicholson Road on the north edge of town. The Interstate Commerce Commission investigated, and issued this report. |
