“A lady was attacked on Monmouth street, [Newport], between Jefferson and Mayo, last Sunday morning while on her way home from church, by an ill-tempered goat. She was pursued by the goat and thrown against the brick wall of a house nearby. A little son who accompanied her endeavored to aid his mother, but found the goat too strong for him, and could not distract its attention. To the lady's appeal for help, a half dozen reprobate young men near by answered with jeers, while one great hulk informed her that it was too much fun to be stopped. She at length succeeded in reaching a gate, and slipped into the yard, where she remained for some time, until a pedestrian passing saw the situation of affairs, seized the goat, and held it until the lady got out of sight.” Courier-Journal, November 19, 1874 |
