German National Bank | Liberty National Bank | Liberty National Bank |
The German National Bank, 1912, 609 Madison. The bank changed its name to the Liberty National Bank in January 1918 during a waive of anti-German hysteria that swept Covington and other parts of the country. To read about what mob ignorance is capable of, we urge you to read Lisa Gilliam's great piece from the Kentucky Heritage Magazine, which will give you all the ugly details. It's a big pdf, but well worth your time. You can find it
here. Thanks to Lisa Gilliam and the Kentucky Heritage magazine for permission to post it! |
Security Savings Bank, below, was earlier the Western German Savings Bank, but also changed their name in the anti-German hysteria of 1918 |

The Peoples Savings Bank and Trust would later merge with the German National Bank (see note above), which had renamed itself the Liberty National Bank. They became the Peoples-Liberty Bank and Trust, which was bought by the First National Bank of Cincinnati, which became Star Bank, to be bought by US Bank of Minneapolis. Got that? Care? |
There's a collection of old Covington Bank notes here.
